Breakdown cover is really cheap now at around £50 a year so you shouldn’t even consider not being covered.
If you break down on a motorway pull over to the hard shoulder and follow the rules:
- Point your wheels in towards the embankment so if your car is hit it won’t go back into traffic.
- Switch your hazard warning lights on.
- Use the left hand door to get out of the car, along with any passengers. Leave animals in the car.
- Stand on the embankment, away from the traffic.
- Wear reflective clothing – you should keep a jacket in the car so you have it if needed.
- Do not put out a reflective warning triangle.
- Call your breakdown cover provider or, if necessary, the police. You can use a mobile or a motorway emergency telephone which will tell police motorway desk staff where you are.
If you break down on roads other than motorways follow the rules:
- Try to get your car off the road and switch on your hazard warning lights.
- If your car is still on the road and is at risk of being hit place your warning triangle 45 metres behind your car and stand, with any passengers, away from the car.
- Wear reflective clothing – you should keep a jacket in the car so you have it if needed.
- Call the police or breakdown service and let them know where you are.
