Are You an Active Travel Champion?
Active travel is opting to walk or cycle, rather than choosing to use the car for every trip. These journeys can be to work, the school run or on any short journey you take
Active Travel has so many benefits if you opt to use it regularly. Examples include environmental benefits by reducing greenhouse gases, health benefits of increased fitness and money saved on fuel and parking.
The North Yorkshire County Council Sustainable Travel team are hoping to inspire others to use Active Travel modes, from hearing positive stories from people who are already are committed – Active Travel Champions.
Bob Houghton and family are an example of people who are already very keen on promoting active travel and said, “We cycle locally as a family because it’s cheap, better for the environment and often quicker than using the car. The travel is literally door-to-door, without the hassles of searching or paying for parking. It increases the amount of time we are in the fresh air and we would recommend everyone to increase the amount of time they spend outdoors, either walking or like us cycling”.
If you recognise yourself as been an Active Travel Champion, we would like to hear your story to encourage others to be more active in their travel
Jackie Speakman from the Sustainable Travel team said, “We are hoping to change people’s habits from driving on all short journeys and increase the number of people who opt to walk or cycle instead. By hearing other people’s positive experiences of Active Travel, I am hoping it will encourage others to do the same”
If you use Active Travel and have a positive message highlighting the benefits you have gained from using it, please email your story to NYCC Sustainable Travel Officer, Jackie Speakman at opennorthyorkshire@northyorks.gov.uk
The Active Travel Champion’s stories will be shared on Open North Yorkshire social media pages and some stories will be use in further publicity campaigns.
